Featured Article: The Mystery of Pool Perfume
Indoor pools certainly have air quality issues. Most notably: the infamous “chlorine smell” of the pool room itself. The first and most accepted method used to address this problem involves diluting the air with fresh air from outside of the contaminated area. In other cases, attempts are being made to install a return air vent at deck level to draw off the offending air particles.
We are now offering customers a choice between fluid coolers and CTS Cooling Towers to provide the cooling option for many of our systems. CTS Cooling Towers offer several advantages:
In 1964, Epting Distributors Inc. was started as a small, family owned distributorship serving HVAC contractors in South Carolina, Georgia, and North Carolina.
Today, three generations of family ownership have grown Epting Distributors to 11 different branches serving countless dealers and mechanical contractors in South Carolina, North Carolina and eastern Georgia.
In addition to the Tempstar residential product line, Epting Distributors markets and sells commercial equipment. They offer many lines of specialty equipment including Dry-Air pool dehumidifiers, and the Veri-Dry line of dehumidification accessories.
We have installed, through one of our mechanical contractor clients, Stewarts Heating and Air, Dry-Air pool dehumidifiers in Fairfield Inns, Spring Hill Suites by Marriot, and Holiday Inn Express hotels in the highly variable climate of Eastern North Carolina. We have also installed the Dry-Air dehumidification system for use in a therapy pool system in Walton Woods, a CMC retirement complex in Raleigh.
This same contractor has successfully installed Veri-Dry accessories on Carrier commercial equipment for ATEX Manufacturing, a specialty textile manufacturer in Southern Pines, North Carolina. With the success of these installations, we are actively planning to continue our use of the Dry-Air and Veri-Dry systems in the near future.

Pooling Resources: Winning the Battle Against Water Vapor, Part 1
A truly wise engineer once stated that “If it is a battle with water, water always wins.” Since there is such an on-going battle, it is good to consider the wisdom of military experts. Their fundamental rule is that, “The best offense is a good defense”. For indoor pools of all kinds, this translates to a basic element of natatorium construction: Vapor Barriers. They are not only essential. They are critical.
Maintenance Tip for Pool Dehumidifiers: Clean Those Filters!
So many sayings from our grandparents come to mind when thinking about maintenance. “A stitch in time” really does “save nine” and “an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure”. A maintenance routine and schedule carefully observed saves time and money in many ways.
Mechanical Musings: To Bid or Not To Bid (Spec to Spec Bidding of Indoor Pool Dehumidifiers)
Bidding a project is time consuming and stressful. Clients frequently use 6-10 bidders on each project. This is often due to company policy. “Behind-the-scenes” politics may come into play when a company calls for bids knowing that a firm has been pre-selected. Contractors cannot control these factors. The choice to present the best possible bid is always good business and a choice towards success.
“It’s unwise to pay too much, but worse to pay too little. When you pay too much, you lose a little money – that is all. When you pay too little, you sometimes lose everything, because the thing you bought was incapable of doing the thing that you bought it to do. The common law of business balance prohibits paying a little and getting a lot – it can’t be done. If you deal with the lowest bidder, it is well to add something for the risk you run. And if you do that, you will have enough to pay for something better.”
