Many clients want to use Radiant Floor Heating to heat these pool rooms
and keep the deck area around the pool warmer. What
needs to be understood is that Radiant Floor heating will NOT
heat the complete pool room 100%. Radiant Floor Heating HEATS
OBJECTS NOT AIR. (i.e. – heats the concrete floor, not
the air in the room). It will serve to keep the deck area around
the pool warmer, but is not recommended to try to meet the total
heating requirements of the pool room. In many climates, radiant
floor heat will not cover the heat loss of the structure because
there are not enough BTU’s in radiant heating to cover
the total heat requirements of the room.
If
the concern is for a warm deck
area, then EPS recommends the following:
DO
NOT INSULATE AROUND THE SWIMMING POOL. Instead,
insulate 2” Rigid Styrofoam or better
around the outside perimeter to the footings.
Heat in a pool does not travel downward – it
travels through the walls of the pool into
the deck area. As it does, it will warm the
deck area; with heat loss stopped at the walls
where it’s been insulated.
Also
note that with RADIANT FLOOR HEATING
and no other heating method used (installed
in the supply line of the duct work
coming off the unit into the pool
room), we cannot move a flow of warm
across the glass surfaces to keep
them dry. The client will experience
condensation if only using radiant
floor in their rooms where there
is a high amount of glass used or
in colder climates. We highly recommend
that you discuss with your client
the potential of problems with only
this heating method.
